Reasons people sue (I kid you not)

1. Broke beer bottle on telephone pole inches away from the bottle and the shards cut him. Sued the beer company for not designing a safer beer bottle.

2. Swallowing a razer and suing Gillette because they said the razer was stainless steel but it wasn’t and thus didnt show up on the Xray when he got injured.

3. Banging in a nail with a loaded revolver because the hammer was too far away and suing the gun company because you shot yourself.

4. Drinking spark plug cleaner to get high and then suing for unsafe product.

5. Grown woman locks herself ON PURPOSE in the car trunk to kill herself but changed her mind and then wasn’t able to get out. Sues Ford.

6. Grown man climbs onto the roof of his neighbors house to dive into a shallow above ground pool and gets injured. Sues the pool company. (Wins)

Except for #6 none of them won. Remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer spilled coffee and sued, right as the opposing counsel said “First, we’ll give you a lifetime supply of coffee, and then we’ll…” and Kramer interrupts and says “I’LL TAKE IT!”? It’s sad that such things truly do happen. Whoever the lawyers were who took these cases it’s your fault good decent lawyers have to grin and bear the lawyer jokes!

  1. thats atrocious!!! The worst i heard was some woman in america who sued wal mart (i think) for tripping in their store and hurting herself…..and get this….it was her own 2 year old son she tripped over!!! madness!

  2. *deleted* I hate it when people sue for ridiculous reasons. I also really hate those late-night ads on cable television where some lawyer promises to “…make those doctors PAY.” Clearly, the only purpose of the law is to make people rich because of their own stupidity. Yes, that must be it.

  3. there is a place for civil suits(sp?) it keeps corporations and public service companies in check..I think there needs to be a criminialzation of certain corporate acts as they are essentially murder..but yes in the US sense reform of the code is a must…it’s a shame that innocent parties often have to settle because they cant afford the cost of fighting a case.

  4. Aisha,I became pregnant with my daughter while using TWO forms of birth control. I’m happy she’s here now but finding out about her was quite a shock at first. Do I have a case? Lol….Don’t want to use my name because I love her and don’t ever want her to feel unwanted but still…to have TWO forms of birth control fail…

  5. ah muh muh, it was weird, they said the pool company should have made the pool safer because the bottom was slippery causing his injury. It’s a very criticized decision though.bongi i heard about that case, atrocious!!Rehtwo, oh yes the “for the people not the powerful” ambulance chaser commercials, again they have a use in society but they go about it the wrong way.Aaminah I will cal you after next Monday I have exams this week and next.Zak ofcourse civil suits are essential and the companies must bear the losses for the harm they commit, but when people sue because they drank spark fluid… they make those with legitimate suits look foolish and make it harder for others with actual complaints. Anon yes, we learned about that in torts, the facts of the case were more than they appearedAnon actually we learned about that in class! About wrongful birth. A lot of them are for when the child ihs born deformed as a result of misdiagnosis and had the parent known they would have aborted. For healthy children there have been cases and I’m not sure the results but we talked about the ethical dilemma of parents who can’t afford another kid and get pregnant etc. though they got a vasectomy or tied tubes. I’m not sure birth control would be as much of a case b/c they’re not hailed to be 100% effective. So in short I’m not sure! But its a very interesting thought, shouldnt the company help out if the parent is now financially, socially, mentally drained as a result of being a parent when there was no plan. I can’t recall but I think if the child is healthy there is no comensation, but if the parents are very poor and chose not to have more for $ reasons, the case law will show what happens.Okay off to class!

  6. good read, though lawyers DO have a place in society essentail to mantain a check and balance system on private and public sectors, many cases are trully frivilous.people just need to learn, that’s all. we need a small-claims court, sort of like an easy way out for claims as stupid as those, rather than taking them to higher courts.

  7. Aisha, my neighbor told me the following story the other day.A family was on a long drive with their camper. They were on a long straight road so the drive decided to put it on auto pilot. Then the driver went to the back and went to sleep. Of course it crashed. They sued the company who manufactuers the camper vehicle for not being clear enough in the owner’s manual that auto pilot requires you to stay at the driver’s seat…Now people being this ignorant and sue-happy is no surprise to me but my neighbor tells me THEY WON.Can this possibly be true? Have you ever come across this case?

  9. i remember covering the ford case in one of my classes! what is it called, reasonable foreseeance or something? if a company has that they could be responsible?that’s why we see all of those ridiculous warning labels these days…like, don’t iron the clothes that you’re actually wearing, and costume capes do not actually give you the power to fly… 🙂

  11. I like the loaded gun case lol! I’m telling you there are people out there who live to think of ways to sue others! I’m glad we have laws in place, but it’s just sad when people try to take advantage of it! Like that McDonald’s case…I can’t believe the woman was so silly not to know that her coffee was hot! (What did she expect?). Anyway, it’s just sad to see the things people will do for money!

  12. Wayfarer, idiot clauses, lol I second that.BBCD indeed!Stabani yeah, we have procedural checks in place to prevent truly frivolous claims like 12(b)(6) and rule 11 sanctions but still, hard to believe some things get through. Perhaps a seperate court might not be a bad ideaTee- I had to read that twice. Unbelievable. I will be checking on my legal database to find that case after exams are over and let you know. That is unbelievable and yet I could imagine it happening. Though for someone to win.. that’s shocking!Mommyblogr, yes you won’t see me chasing ambulances 🙂Shabina, yes! did you take a law class? Its called forseeable misuse or reasonably forseeable that a situation like this could happen and they didnt protect or warn against it they could be held liable.Enyur, yeah that was just dumb. About the McD’s case I can’t recall now but we learned about it in class and she actually did have a legitimate case but it was put in a false way for the media to hype it up, but it was actually a legitimate claim. When exams are over i’ll find the real case for you if you remind me and you can see what it was all about.

  14. Thanks! This was actually interesting and educational. I guess common sense isn’t that common after all! lol! You would think that the person would have enough sense to know that you need to be careful with ‘hot beverages’ or ‘sharp objects.’ Anyway, I guess there’s a first time for everything. At least now that they place the warning on the cups, it would eliminate any further liability or law suit. But then again, people will find other ways lol!By the way, what did you think about this case?

  15. Well according to the facts as we learned in class the coffee wasn’t just ordinary hot. It was so hot it could cause third degree burns which coffee shouldn’t do. There was no warning (which now there is) and the lid was not put on correctly either. She had to suffer in the hospital for 8 days with major third degree burns. So for me I think its a case of the company rethinking how it warns people of the degree of hotness and maybe make it less warm. Have beter cups and lids etc. I thin it was ok but only after learning more of the details 🙂

  16. Okay so yeah that makes sense now lol! I don’t know if you’re a daily coffee drinker…I am. I buy my morning coffee from Tim Horton’s (it’s like Dunkin’ Donuts) and I find their coffee is “comfertable hot” however, I have stopped to buy McDonald’s coffee once in awhile and have found their coffee ‘tongue-burning’ scalding hot everytime. I stick to my Tim Horton’s now. lol!

  19. It is acctually a horrible experience for the person and the family involved that is being sued no matter the absurdity of a suit, but your site brings a little comic relief, thank you.
Here is one for you: An Indian family man who refuses to pay rent on time and harrasses a single mother of 3, is now suing her because he failed as a businessman. Sometimes the justice system lets the society it works for down:(
